English Language Arts

In Grades 5 and 6, the EL Education ELA curriculum emphasizes rigorous, content-rich modules that guide students through deep investigations of meaningful topics, such as human rights, the natural world, and social responsibility. Each module is built around a central text or set of texts and includes a carefully sequenced progression of reading, writing, and discussion tasks. Students engage in close reading of complex literature and informational texts, develop research and note-taking skills, and produce extended writing in a variety of forms—including narrative, informative, and opinion writing. Lessons are designed to foster independence, critical thinking, and academic discourse, helping students develop as readers who can analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information across multiple sources.

The module structure also supports knowledge-building by intentionally connecting literacy instruction to science, social studies, and other content areas. This integrated approach deepens comprehension and vocabulary development while ensuring that students are prepared for the demands of middle school and beyond. Through collaborative discussions, performance tasks, and real-world writing experiences, students in Grades 5 and 6 are empowered to think deeply, communicate effectively, and engage meaningfully with their learning.
