Social Studies

To learn and practice skills in History & Social Science, we use resources from Investigating History as well as those curated by classroom teachers. Learning in History & Social Science is also aligned with topics and texts taught in English Language Arts. 


Supplementary resources include Scholastic and primary source documents.


Grade 5 History & Social Sciences

Learning includes: 

  • Explore the experiences of different people (Native Peoples, Europeans, enslaved Africans) in the 13 American colonies

  • Learn about people and events involved in the westward expansion of the United States 

  • Explain the conflicts that led to the United States Civil War

  • Understand the civil rights struggles (of African Americans, women, and others) in the United States during the 1800s and 1900s


Grade 6 History & Social Sciences

Learning includes: 

  • Study places and peoples from the perspectives of different social scientists (like geographers and economists) 

  • Understand how humans first began to form complex societies 

  • Explore the peoples and physical environments (geographies) of ancient societies

  • Explain how geography and climate affect how people live and work


Students will also participate in an experiential learning experience at the Woods Hole Historical Museum.
